GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Salem University Tigers baseball team continued their strong spring campaign on Sunday, securing a dominant doubleheader sweep over Glenville State University at the Sue Morris Sports Complex. Salem took the opener with a 14-8 victory before shutting the door in the nightcap with a 7-2 win, moving to 17-8 on the season.
Game 1: Salem 14, Glenville State 8
The Tigers' offense exploded in the first game of the day, racking up 14 runs on 15 hits. Salem established control early and used a massive seven-run fourth inning to break the game open.
Reese Rinna led the charge, finishing the game with a home run and four RBIs. Landon McAlpine was equally impactful at the top of the lineup, recording a triple and driving in a run while scoring three times himself. Aaron Forbes also turned in a multi-hit performance, driving in a pair of runs.
On the mound, Conor Thiele earned the win, navigating through the Pioneer lineup to keep the Tigers in a position to let the offense work. Andrew George provided solid relief to close out the 14-8 victory.
Game 2: Salem 7, Glenville State 2
Salem carried that momentum into the finale, using consistent situational hitting and disciplined pitching to complete the sweep.
The Tigers showcased their depth in the second game. Tyson Shumaker stayed hot, going 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored. Brandon Hoft and Joe Wintermute both delivered crucial RBIs to build a lead the Pioneers couldn't overcome.
In the circle, the Tigers' pitching staff stifled the Glenville State bats. After a solid start, the bullpen held firm, with Logan Prater and Zach Allen combining to allow zero runs over the final frames. The defense was also sharp, highlighted by Joe Wintermute's steady play at shortstop and Cody Thomas at third base.
