SALEM, W.Va. — Salem University dropped a high-scoring matchup to Shawnee State on Tuesday afternoon, falling 21-4 at Frank Loria Memorial Field.
The Tigers kept pace early, answering a leadoff home run by Shawnee State in the top of the first with a run of their own in the bottom half. Joe Wintermute reached base and eventually scored on an RBI single from Reese Rinna to tie the game at 1-1.
However, the Bears broke the game open over the next two innings. A four-run third inning, aided by defensive miscues, gave Shawnee State a 5-1 lead. They followed it with a seven-run fourth inning—again capitalizing on errors—to extend the advantage to 12-1.
Shawnee State continued to add on throughout the middle innings, highlighted by multiple home runs from Diego Mendoza and a grand slam-style rally in the eighth, pushing the lead to 19-1 and later 21-1.
Salem collected nine hits in the contest, led by Wintermute, who went 3-for-5 at the plate. Rinna added two hits and an RBI, while Kylian Izaguirre chipped in a double.
The Tigers showed some late life in the ninth inning. Max Atkinson launched a two-run home run, and Ryan Chordis followed with an inside-the-park homer to cut into the deficit and account for the final 21-4 score.
On the mound, Andrew George started and allowed one run over two innings. Ein Wolfe was tagged with the loss, while several relievers saw action as Shawnee State totaled 17 hits and took advantage of four Salem errors.
Salem will look to bounce back in its next outing as the Tigers continue their homestand.
