Bridgeport, W.Va. – Salem University split a doubleheader against West Virginia State on Saturday at The Bridge, falling 11-4 in the opener before bouncing back with a 3-0 shutout victory in game two.

Salem showed resilience offensively but could not overcome a pair of big innings from West Virginia State in an 11-4 loss.
The Tigers broke through in the third inning, scoring three runs to cut into an early deficit. Jacobi Gledhill delivered a two-RBI double to plate Alyssa Schultz and Kendall Lemley, while Ali Shrieve followed with an RBI single to bring Salem within 7-3.
Salem added another run in the fourth when Schultz singled home Layla McClung, trimming the margin to 7-4.
Gledhill led the Tigers with two RBIs, while Schultz, Bella Ortiz, and McClung each recorded hits in the contest. Shrieve also contributed at the plate with an RBI.
Despite the offensive effort, West Virginia State pulled away late, scoring four runs across the sixth and seventh innings.
Salem 3, WVSU 0
Salem responded with one of its strongest performances of the season, shutting out West Virginia State 3-0 behind a complete-game effort from Kendall Lemley.
The Tigers struck early in the first inning as Brooke Wise and Alyssa Schultz each singled to set the table. Shrieve delivered again with a two-RBI single, giving Salem a quick 2-0 lead.
Salem added an insurance run in the second inning when Wise drove in Lemley with an RBI double to extend the lead to 3-0.
Lemley was dominant in the circle, tossing all seven innings while allowing seven hits and striking out six without issuing a walk.
Offensively, Wise and Schultz each collected two hits to lead the Tigers, while Shrieve finished with two RBIs in the win.
Salem will look to build on the game two momentum as the Tigers continue their homestand.
