PHILLIPI, W.Va. (Nov. 12) – Behind two goals in the first 15 minutes by junior
Samir Amzil, the Tigers earned a 3-0 win over Alderson Broaddus Thursday night and advanced to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II Championship game.
The Salem International University men's soccer team improves to 10-8-1 overall and will play Post University for the ECAC Division II Championship on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 1:30 in Waterbury, Connecticut. Meanwhile, the Battlers end the season 10-7-3 overall.
The Tigers didn't wait long to score the game's first goal. Amzil sent a free-kick from about 25 yards out into the back of the net 46 seconds into the match to give Salem International a 1-0 lead.
Amzil wasn't done, as less than 14 minutes later he took a pass from senior
Javier Ruiz (Mexico City, Mexico/Universidad del Valle de Mexico) to the right side of the net and buried his second goal to extend the Tiger lead to two less than 15 minutes into the match.
Salem International added another insurance marker in the 58th minute when junior
Alexandre Costet (Saint Etienne, France/Leonard de Vinci) drove a ball past the goalkeeper from 10 yards out.
Senior
Elliot Cook (Nottingham, England/South Nottinghamshire Academy) made two saves to earn the shutout victory. Cook made his first appearance since injuring his hand in a match on Oct. 5 earlier this season.
The Tigers advance to the ECAC Division II Championship for the second-straight season, where once again they will square off with Post. The match is set for Sunday, Nov. 15 at 1:30 p.m. from the Eagles' home field in Waterbury. Salem International will look to avenge a 2-0 loss in last year's ECAC Division II Championship game.
