Tigers swept at Kentucky Wesleyan

OWENSBORO, Ky. (March 21) – The Tigers were swept by Kentucky Wesleyan College by scores of 6-1 and 8-0 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) action Saturday afternoon at Foster Field.

The losses send the Salem International University softball team to 4-10 overall and 0-3 in conference play (the final contest did not count towards G-MAC standings). Meanwhile, the Panthers improve to 3-0 in the G-MAC, 9-6 overall this season.

Kentucky Wesleyan scored runs in four different innings to deal Salem International a 6-1 game one defeat.

The Panthers loaded the bases with one out, but freshman pitcher Katie Holestin (Covington, Va./Allegheny) limited the damage to two runs by forcing a pair of fly balls to end the inning.

Kentucky Wesleyan extended its lead to 3-0 in the third inning, but freshman right fielder Alyssa Discepola (Rio Grande, N.J./Middle Township) led the fourth off with a double and was driven in by classmate Hanna Crew (Canton, Ohio/Perry) with a two-out single to cut into the deficit.

The Panthers rebuilt its lead with a run in the bottom half of the fourth and a pair of insurance markers in the sixth to earn the victory.

Holestin (3-5) was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on 10 hits with a pair of strikeouts in 5.0 innings in the circle.

Kentucky Wesleyan did not let up offensively in its 8-0 run-rule win in five innings over the Tigers in game two.

The Panthers held the Tigers without a hit until the fifth inning and scored runs in the first and fourth to take a 5-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth. Kentucky Wesleyan ended the game that inning with three runs on four hits, including a walk-off two-run single to end the contest.

Redshirt-freshman Kayla Lynch (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) was charged with the loss. Lynch (1-5) allowed seven runs (three earned) on seven hits and struck out one in 4.1 innings pitched. Her sister, freshman third baseman Shannon Lynch (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) recorded the Tigers lone hit in the game two loss.

Salem International will be back on the field Tuesday, March 24 to make up a non-conference doubleheader with Malone. The first-pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
