Softball splits at Ohio Valley

VIENNA, W.Va. (April 15) – The Tigers earned a split with Ohio Valley University, winning 6-3 in game two following a 6-5 loss in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Jackson Park.

The spilt improves the Salem International University softball team to 8-24 overall, 2-12 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots move to 1-13 in the G-MAC, 6-33 overall.

Ohio Valley capitalized on an error in the first inning, but the Tigers quickly responded with three runs in the second. Freshman Tori Butler (Hedgesville, W.Va./Musselman) delivered an RBI single and classmate Alyssa Discepola (Rio Grande, N.J./Middle Township) drove in a pair with another single to give Salem International a 3-1 lead.

Freshman Hanna Crew tacked on another with a solo home run in the third inning, her first collegiate long ball, and fellow freshman Ashley Williams (Ocala, Fla./West Port) connected on a RBI double later in the inning to push the Tiger lead to 4-1.

Ohio Valley cut into the Salem International lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning, but did not muster any further offense. The Fighting Scots scattered five more hits in the game, but did not manufacture a rally against Tiger pitcher Katie Holestin (Covington, Va./Allegheny).

Holstin improved to 6-12 on the season after limiting Ohio Valley to three runs (two earned) on nine hits while striking out five and walking none in a complete game effort.

Four Tigers finished with multiple hits, led by Discepola who added two RBI to her line. Butler, Crew and junior Katie Chryssofos (Chapmanville, W.Va./Logan) all chipped in two hits in the win.

Salem International held a 5-3 lead heading into the sixth inning in game one, before a late rally gave the Scots a walk-off win.

Chryssofos got the Tigers on the board in the first inning with an RBI single, but Ohio Valley responded in the bottom half of the first with two runs to take the lead.

Freshman Shannon Lynch (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) hit a home run, her first collegiate round tripper, in the bottom of the second to even the score at 2-2. After the Scots regained the lead at 3-2 in the fourth inning, the Tigers plated three runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Butler drove in senior Kayla Guta (Bentleyville, Pa./Bentworth) with a single to tie the game and Chryssofos connected for her ninth home run of the season to give Salem International the lead.

After trimming the Tiger lead to one in the sixth inning, Ohio Valley put runners on first and third with one out in the seventh inning. The next batter delivered a walk-off base-hit that scored both runners to give the Scots the victory.

Redshirt-freshman Kayla Lynch (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) took the loss. Lynch (2-12) allowed six runs on 11 hits with one strikeout over 6.1 innings in the circle.

Guta led the team at the dish with three hits and two runs scored, while Chryssofos and Crew each chipped in a pair of hits apiece in the loss. Chryssofos finished with a team-best three RBI in game one.

Salem International is back on the diamond Friday, April 17 when they head to Pepper Pike, Ohio to play Ursuline. The Tigers will play a doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Saturday against the Arrows. The first-pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m.
