PEPPER PIKE, Ohio (April 17) – The Tigers rallied from a 3-0 deficit with four runs in the final five innings to earn a 4-3 win over Ursuline College Friday evening in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play at the UC Softball Field.
The win improves the Tigers to 3-12 in league play and 9-24 overall. Meanwhile, the Arrows fall to 7-20 overall and 0-15 in the G-MAC this season.
Ursuline plated two runs in the first and another in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Salem International rallied to tie the game in the third behind an RBI infield single by freshman
Alyssa Discepola (Rio Grande, N.J./Middle Township) and a two-RBI double by junior
Katie Chryssofos (Chapmanville, W.Va./Logan), but Discepola was thrown out at the plate to keep the game tied.
The Tigers manufactured the winning run in the sixth inning when freshman
Tori Butler (Hedgesville, W.Va./Musselman) was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a pair of ground outs, and scored on a two-out single by classmate
Cass Alexy (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford).
The Arrows threatened in the final frame with runners on first and second with one out, but Tiger pitcher
Katie Holestin (Covington, Va./Allegheny) retired the next two batters to give Salem International the win.
Holestin improved to 7-12 this season after limiting the Arrows to four runs (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk issued.
Chryssofos led the team at the dish with two RBI, while Butler scored two runs to lead the Tigers on the bases.
Salem International and Ursuline will conclude its three-game series tomorrow, Saturday April 18 with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
