PEPPER PIKE, Ohio (April 18) – The Tigers finished off Ursuline College with a doubleheader sweep, winning 9-5 and 5-0 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) action Saturday.
The sweep improves the Salem International softball team to 11-24 overall and 5-12 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Arrows fall to 0-17 in the G-MAC and 7-22 overall this season.
Salem International took advantage of four Ursuline errors in its game one 9-5 victory.
With the Tigers ahead 2-1 in the fourth inning, junior
Katie Chryssofos (Chapmanville, W.Va./Logan) opened the game up with a two-out grand slam to push the team's lead to 6-1. A one-out error that allowed redshirt-freshman
Kayla Lynch (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) to reach base extended the inning and allowed Chryssofos to come to the plate and hit the grand slam.
Freshman
Tori Butler (Hedgesville, W.Va./Musselman) tacked on another run with a RBI single in the fourth, while Chryssofos finished off the frame by belting her second home run of the game to push the Salem International lead to 9-1.
The Arrows pushed the game into the seventh inning with a run in the sixth and threatened with three more in the seventh, but a pop up to freshman shortstop
Cass Alexy (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) ended the inning and gave Salem International a 9-5 game one win.
Lynch improved to 3-12 this season after limiting the Arrows to five runs (four earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts and no walks issued.
Chryssofos led the team at the plate with a career-high seven RBI on two home runs, while Butler drove in the other two runs on two base hits. Senior
Kayla Guta chipped in three hits in the win.
Freshman
Katie Holestin (Covington, Va./Allegheny) tossed a complete game shutout to help the Tigers earn the sweep in a 5-0 win.
Salem International held a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when a costly error by Ursuline allowed junior
Kirstie Young (Hollywood, Fla./McArthur) to score and extend the Tiger lead. Salem International took advantage of another error in the seventh to tally three more runs, including RBI base hits by Young and freshman
Shannon Lynch (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) to push the Tiger lead to 5-0.
The run support was more than enough for Holestin, who improved to 8-12 with the complete game shutout, while allowing just four hits with two strikeouts in the win.
Young, freshman
Alyssa Discepola (Rio Grande, N.J./Middle Township) and junior
Jane Judware (North Lawrence, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) all finished with two hits, with Young adding two RBI to her final line.
Chrssofos finished off a very productive week for the Tigers. The Logan High School alum went 10-for-25 (.400) with four home runs, 13 RBI and seven runs scored to help Salem International go 6-1 this past week, including a 4-1 mark against G-MAC opponents.
The Tigers return to the diamond Tuesday, April 21 when they play host to Ohio Valley in a makeup doubleheader from last week. The team has cancelled its previously scheduled non-conference trip to Clarion. The first-pitch for the Ohio Valley doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
