NYACK, N.Y. (Jan. 16) – Despite heading into halftime tied, the Tigers were handed a 105-75 loss at Nyack Saturday afternoon in non-conference play.
The loss drops the Salem International University men's basketball team to 3-11 overall, while the Warriors improve to 5-9 this season.
Sophomore
Gerard Tarin (Fort Myers, Fla./East Lee County) led the team and narrowly missed a double-double with 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Sophomore
Saquan Epps (Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Douglass) and senior
David Williams (Cannonsburg, Pa./Cannon-McMillan) each tallied 11 points, while junior
Lamonte Fields (Dinwiddie, Va./Dinwiddie) chipped in 10 in the loss.
Salem International trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, before battling back to tie the game at 41-41 heading into halftime.
After the Tigers took a 52-50 lead with 16:04 remaining in the game, the Warriors went on to outscore Salem 29-8 over the next eight minutes to build up a 79-60 advantage. Nyack continued to add to its lead and held a double-digit edge for the final nine minutes of the game.
The Warriors finished down low, out-scoring the Tigers 44 to 14 in points in the paint. The Warriors, who shot 53 percent (15 of 28) from the field in the first half, barely missed in their big second period. Nyack shot 23 of 36 (64 percent) and connected on 16 free throws.
Nyack was led by GaBriel Chandler, who finished with a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
The Tigers resume Great Midwest Athletic Conference play on Thursday, Jan. 21 when they host defending league champion Alderson Broaddus around 7 p.m.
