Early goals propel Lakers past Tigers 2-0

ERIE, PA - A pair of first-half goals from Mercyhurst University would give the Lakers a 2-0 win against Salem International on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 22) in men's collegiate soccer action.

The Tigers (4-8-2) will hold senior day festivities on Saturday, October 29 as SIU hosts Notre Dame College (Ohio) at 2 p.m. The Tigers will honor four seniors to close out the 2016 regular season at Catalano Stadium.

Mercyhurst (11-4-1) would open the scoring in the 19th minute as Jorge Gonzalez would find the back of the net after receiving a cross from teammate Connor Wilkinson to make it 1-0.

Samir Amsil looked to even things for the Tigers in the 33rd minute, but his shot would be saved by Mercyhurst netminder Alex Brems.

The Lakers would up their lead to 2-0 in the 39th minute as Wilkinson found himself one-on-one after a breakaway with Tigers junior goalkeepr Dom Gillespie. Mercyhurst rattled off a total of seven shots in the first half with four of them making their way on net

Both goalkeepers would make a pair of saves in the second half of action to keep their teams in the match. Brems would make his first save of the half in the 53rd minute as sophomore Marcelo Pacheco found himself with a golden opportunity to get the Tigers onto the scoreboard. After things seemed to calm down, junior Mohamed Ali Khalaf had his shot stopped by Brems in the 77th of play.

Gillespie recorded each of his two saves in the second half with stops in the 70th minute and 82nd minute of action.

Gillespie would finish with four saves in net for the Tigers, while Brems made four saves of his own in goal for the Lakers.

Mercyhurst outshot the Tigers 13-7 and 6-4 in shots on goal. The Lakers took six corners in the match compared to one for the Tigers. Both teams were flagged six times for being offsides in the match.
