SALEM, WV- A pair of second-half goals from Notre Dame College (OH) would give the Falcons a 2-0 win against Salem International on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 29) in men's collegiate soccer action. Prior to the start of the game, the Tigers honored seven seniors who played their final game at Catalano Stadium.
The Tigers (4-9-2) will head to West Virginia Wesleyan on Monday night (Oct. 31) for their season finale with the Bobcats. This will be the first meeting of the season between the two teams after having a meeting earlier in the season postponed.
Notre Dame (OH) (10-4-2) would take advantage of a defensive miscue by the Tigers in the 55th minute as Thomaz Freitas beat Salem International goalkeeper
Dom Gillespie to make it 1-0 Falcons. Freitas would later help the Falcons up their lead to 2-0 as his pass found the foot of Reece Daly, who would bury his shot into the low right corner of the net.
Salem International dominated the first 45 minutes of play but would head to the locker room with the score tied 0-0. The Tigers outshot the Falcons 8-2 in the half and peppered Notre Dame (OH) goalie Daniele De Angelis with five shots on frame.
Both goalkeepers would be busy in the early going of the second half as the Tigers and Falcons looked to break the 0-0 stalemate. Sophomore
Danny Carnalla had a golden opportunity to try and get the Tigers onto the scoreboard after the Falcons scored the first goal of the match. Carnalla's second shot-on-goal would be wrapped-up by the Falcons goalie.
The Tigers would have one more good look while trailing 1-0 as freshman
Finn Rohland tried to catch De Angelis napping. Rohland looked to have his spot picked, but De Angelis would get a pair of hands on the shot and preserve his teams lead.
Gillespie would finish the match with four saves in net for the Tigers, while De Angelis made seven saves in goal for the Falcons.
Sophomore
Emilio Marti and Carnalla would each finish with two shots-on-goal for the Tigers, while senior
Samir Amzil and sophomore
James Cockshott each recorded one shot.
The Tigers outshot Notre Dame (OH) 12-8 in the match. Corner kicks were not much of a factor on the afternoon as the Falcons took two and the Tigers one.
