Tigers strong start not enough in 79-42 loss

ELKINS, WV – The Salem International University women's basketball team would keep things close in the first quarter of play against Davis & Elkins College on Friday afternoon (Dec. 16). The Senators would out-score the Tigers 26-10 in the second quarter en route to a 79-42 victory in NCAA women's collegiate basketball action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  •  First Half
    • The game would be tied for the opening 45 seconds, until the Senators scored the first two-points of the contest.
    • Davis & Elkins held an 17-12 lead against the Tigers after the opening 10 minutes of play.
    • The Tigers shot 25 percent (4-of-16) in the first quarter, while the Senators went 7-of-15 from the floor.
    • The second quarter would see the Senators surpass the 20-point mark, out-scoring Salem 26-10.
    • Davis & Elkins would shoot 62.5 percent from the floor in the quarter and go 5-for-5 from the charity stripe.
    • The Tigers trailed the Senators 43-22 at halftime.
    • SIU senior Franchessca Gill sparked the Tigers offensively in the opening stanza with a team-high eight points, connecting twice from three-point range.
    • SIU sophomore Keishla Gilmore finished the first-half with seven points and two rebounds.
    • Junior Christy Gonzalez pulled-down a team-high five rebounds for the Tigers, while fellow junior Amanda Allred grabbed four boards.
    • Salem was 8-of-31 from the floor and 3-of-15 from downtown, while Davis & Elkins was 17-of-31 from the floor and 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
    • Aliyah Dukes paced the Senators with nine points on 2-of-3 shooting and a 4-for-4 effort at the charity stripe.
    • Kaylee Yergeau would score seven points off of the bench for the Senators, going 3-of-4 from the floor.
  •  Second Half
    • The Senators would start the second-half just like they end the first, scoring 27 points in the third quarter against the Tigers.
    • Davis & Elkins shot 66.7 percent (12-of-18) in the third quarter, while the Tigers scored 11 points and went 4-of-16 from the floor.
    • Both teams would struggle in the fourth quarter as both teams would score eight points a piece.
    • Gilmore paced the Tigers in the second-half, scoring five points.
    • Alicia Roth scored eight points for the Senators in the second-half, going 4-of-5 from the floor.
    • Stephanie Wooten recorded seven assists for Davis & Elkins in the half.
    • The Senators went 14-of-24 in the second-half and 5-of-7 from the free throw line, while SIU went 7-of-34 and 4-of-20 from downtown.
    • SIU recorded eight steals in the second-half.

  • Gilmore finished the contest with a team-high 12 points for SIU, while Gill finished with 10 points.
  • Gonzalez recorded a game-high seven rebounds for the Tigers.

  • Roth finished with a game-high 14 points for Davis & Elkins, while Kali Wilburn scored 12 points and went 6-of-8 from the floor.
