Tigers can't tame Fighting Scots in 90-51 loss

SALEM , WV – The Salem International University women's basketball team closed out the 2016 portion of their home schedule against Edinboro University on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 17). The Fighting Scots would drain 11 three-pointers en route to a 90-51 victory against the Tigers in NCAA women's collegiate basketball action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  •  First Half
    • The Tigers would lead for a total of 3:42 in the first-half of action.
    • Edinboro would hold a 14-8 lead against the Tigers after the opening 10 minutes of play.
    • The Tigers shot 25 percent (3-of-12) in the first quarter, while the Fighting Scots went 4-of-18 from the floor.
    • Edinboro made 10 trips to the charity stripe in the first quarter and went 5-for-10.
    • The second quarter would see the Fighting Scots surpass the 20-point mark, out-scoring Salem 27-8.
    • Edinboro would shoot 57.1 percent from the floor in the quarter and go 12-for-21 from the floor.
    • The Tigers trailed the Fighting Scots 41-16 at halftime.
    • Tigers sophomore Jiahna Flood-Francis paced SIU with eight points in the first-half. She finished 2-of-3 from three-point range.
    • SIU senior Franchessca Gill added five points in the half for the Tigers.
    • SIU senior Karla Hall pulled-down a team-high four rebounds as the Tigers out-rebounded Edinboro 15-12.
    • Salem was 6-of-24 from the floor and 3-of-7 from downtown, while Edinboro was 16-of-39 from the floor and 6-of-12 from the free throw line.
    • Ciara Rosten paced the Fighting Scots with nine points on 4-of-8 shooting.
    • Michelle Jahn and Michaela Barnes would score five points a piece for the Fighting Scots.
    • Jahn and Katie Fischer combined to record eight of Edinboro's 16 first-half steals.
  •  Second Half
    • Hall, Gill, and senior Dorina Barrett each scored five points for SIU in the second-half.
    • The Fighting Scots would start the second-half just like they end the first, scoring 24 points in the third quarter against the Tigers.
    • Edinboro shot 34.8 percent (8-of-23) in the third quarter, while the Tigers scored 15 points and went 5-of-15 from the floor.
    • The Tigers looked to outscore the Fighting Scots in the fourth quarter, but Edinboro would edge SIU 25-20.
    • Jahn scored nine points for the Fighting Scots in the second-half, going 3-of-3 from downtown.
    • Fischer recorded four assists and six points in the half for Edinboro.
    • The Fighting Scots went 17-of-46 in the second-half and 8-of-17 from three-point range, while SIU went 11-of-29 and 10-of-15 from the free throw line.

 STATS FROM THE GAME:

  • Flood-Francis finished the contest with a team-high 11 points for SIU, while Gill finished with 10 points.
  • Hall recorded a team-high six rebounds for the Tigers and added seven points.
  • SIU turned the ball over 29 times in the game, leading to Edinboro scoring 33 points on those miscues.
  • The Fighting Scots bench out-scored the Tigers' bench 46-18.
  • Edinboro would out-score the Tigers 40-22 inside of the paint.
  • Jahn finished with a game-high 14 points for Edinboro, while Rosten scored 11 points and went 5-of-11 from the floor.
  • Cheniya Sharpe would finish the contest with a double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds), while Allison Thompson recorded 10 points for Edinboro.
  • Edinboro out-rebounded SIU 32-28 and finished the game with 24 steals.
  • Fischer tallied five steals for the Fighting Scots, while Jahn tallied four.

UP NEXT:

The Tigers hit the road for a pair of games to close-out the month of December. SIU heads to Seton Hill on Monday afternoon (Dec. 19) for a 12 PM tip-off. SIU then makes the trip to Elizabeth City for a 2 PM tip-off on Friday (Dec. 30). The Tigers return home to host Ferris State at 2 PM on Monday afternoon (Jan. 2) inside T. Edward Davis Gymnasium.
