QUINCY, IL – Freshman
Jarius Farrow scored 14 points for Salem International University in the Tigers opening contest at the Quincy University Subway Holiday Classic. SIU would drop a 105-70 decision to host-school Quincy as Evan McGaughey scored a game-high 22 points for the Hawks on Saturday night (Dec. 17) in NCAA men's basketball action.
The Tigers would have two other players finish in double-digits as freshman
Josh Carpenter scored 13 points, while senior
Victor Blakey added 10 points for SIU. Blakey also turned in a team-high six assists, while junior
Ignacio Rodriguez pulled-down a team-high five rebounds.
Salem will face Lewis University tomorrow afternoon (Dec. 18) on the final day of the QU Subway Holiday Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 PM CT/ 2 PM ET at the Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Illinois.
The Hawks would out-score SIU 50-42 in the opening stanza and take an eight point lead into the locker room after leading by as many as 25 points in the first-half. The Tigers only lead of the contest would come with 16:56 left in the half as a layup by Carpenter gave SIU a 7-4 lead. The SIU lead would hold for 1:57 before the contest would be tied for 32 seconds.
SIU shot 45.7 percent (16-of-35) as a team in the half and went 7-of-10 from the charity stripe. Quincy shot 64.5 percent from the floor (20-of-31) and 5-of-9 from the free throw line. The Tigers hit 3-of-14 three-point attempts and the Hawks 5-of-11 three's.
Quincy used a big-run to start the second-half of action and put some space between themselves and SIU. The Tigers would struggle with their shooting in the half, hitting just 25 percent of their shots (8-of-32). Things would be a little bit easier for the Hawks when it came to scoring as Quincy shot 74.2 percent from the floor and made 23-of-31 buckets in the half.
The Hawks would put up 55 points to the Tigers 28 points in the half en route to the 105-70 victory. The Hawks had six players score double-digits in the contest as Herm Senor II and Joseph Tagarelli each scored 15 points for Quincy. Senor finished the contest with a game-high nine assists for Quincy. Von Washington III scored 14 points for the Hawks, while teammates Marcus Hinton and Dalton Hoover scored 10 points a piece off of the bench for Quincy.
Farrow finished the game 4-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-4 at the charity stripe for SIU, while Carpenter went 5-of-14 from the floor and 2-of-8 from downtown. Blakey recorded two assists and four rebounds to go along with his 10 points and six assists. Rodrigez tallied eight points for the Tigers off of the bench, while sophomore
Drew Pitzer recorded six points and four rebounds.
Salem shot 35.8 percent in the contest (24-of-67), 6-of-25 from three-point range, and 66.7 percent free throw line (16-of-24). The Tigers tallied 34 rebounds, 11 assists, 20 turnovers, and 11 steals. Quincy shot 69.4 percent from the floor (43-of-62), 10-of-20 from downtown, and 9-of-17 from the free throw line. The Hawks recorded 37 rebounds, 23 assists, 18 turnovers, eight blocks, and 12 steals. Quincy out-scored SIU inside of the paint 62-30 and 24-14 in points scored off of turnovers.
