VIENNA, W.Va. (Feb. 6) – Junior
Karla Hall (Richmond, Calif./Laguna Creek) registered her first-career double-double and the Tigers defeated Ohio Valley 73-64 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play Saturday afternoon.
The win improves the Salem International University women's basketball team to 1-8 in the G-MAC, 3-19 overall this season. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 3-19 overall, 2-9 in league play.
After narrowly missing a double-double Thursday, Hall tallied 14 points and 12 rebounds (seven offensive) to lead the Tigers. Senior
Samantha Aiken (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Hilton Head) led the team in scoring with 20 points on 8-of-15 (53 percent) shooting, while redshirt-freshman
Keishla Gilmore (Philadelphia, Pa./Marianna Bracetti) added 12 points and a team-best five assists.
The game was tied at the end of the first quarter, 19-19, but the Tigers opened the second period with eight-straight points to take a 27-19 lead with 8:27 left until halftime. Ohio Valley closed in on Salem International at 31-30 with 4:55 left in the period, but the Tigers ended the half on a 11-6 run to enter halftime with a 42-36 lead.
Salem International opened up a 16 point lead, 54-38, four minutes into the second half and maintained it through the end of the third quarter. The Tigers led by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter, before Ohio Valley made a late effort to get into the game. Ohio Valley's Faith Miller led the Scots with 18 points.
The Tigers are back on the court on Thursday, Feb. 11 when they head to Ohio to take on Cedarville in a league contest at 5:30 p.m.
