SALEM, W.Va. (April 13) – A six-run sixth inning allowed the Tigers to rally for an 8-4 win and a split against Alderson Broaddus in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play Wednesday evening. Alderson Broaddus won game one 6-0 to open the day.
The Salem International University softball team moves to 16-18 overall, 6-12 in the G-MAC. Meanwhile, the Battlers improve to 5-13 in league play, 11-25 overall.
The Tigers rallied from a 4-2 deficit with six runs in the sixth inning to take game one, 8-4.
After scoring a run on a wild pitch, Salem International plated two runs on bases loaded walks to take a 5-4 lead. Sophomore centerfielder
Tori Butler (Hedgeville, W.Va./Musselman) drove in an insurance run with a sacrifice fly, before freshman left fielder
Jordan Whitaker (Palmetto, Fla./Palmetto) broke open the game with a two-RBI triple to give the Tigers an 8-4 advantage.
Chryssofos led the team with two hits, including a solo home run, while senior first baseman
Jane Judware (North Lawrence, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) added a hit and two RBI in the win.
Sophomore pitcher
Katie Holestin (Covington, Va./Allegheny) improved to 5-10 this season after holding the Battlers to four runs on 11 hits with one strikeout in the win.
Alderson Broaddus held a 2-0 lead for most of game one, before four runs in the seventh inning gave it a 6-0 win to open play on Wednesday.
Sophomore pitcher
Kayla Lynch (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) was saddled with the loss. Lynch (10-8) allowed six runs (five earned) on 10 hits in a complete-game effort.
Salem International was limited to three hits in the game and did not break-up the no-hit bid until a single in the fifth inning.
The Tigers and Battlers will resume their series tomorrow, Thursday, April 14 with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
