Baseball clipped twice at Trevecca

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 9) – A three-run seventh inning broke a tie game and gave Trevecca Nazarene a 4-1 win over the Tigers in game one on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans completed the sweep with a 12-2 win in game two.

The Salem International University baseball team falls to 5-26 overall, 1-11 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). Meanwhile, Trevecca improves to a league-best 11-1, 20-14 overall this season.

After the Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, junior second baseman Trent Dalton (Logan, W.Va./Logan) evened the score with a RBI single in the second inning to tie the game.

The two pitching staffs combined to allow zero runs on only five hits over the four innings. The Trojans finally broke the tie in the top of the seventh with three runs on four hits to take a 4-1 lead. The Tigers got their leadoff batter aboard in the bottom of the frame, but the next three batters were retired in order to end the game.

Senior Aaron Alderman (Lakeland, Fla./Lake Gibson), who stifled Trevecca the previous day, entered in the seventh inning and surrendered three runs on four hits, while being charged with the loss. Junior Tanner Helms (Lake Charles, La./Sam Houston) started the game and limited the Trojan offense to one run on six hits with three strikeouts over six innings to take a no-decision.

The Tigers allowed 12-straight runs to open game two in their 12-2 loss to close out the series.

Junior catcher Sean Deviney (Lehigh Acres, Fla./Riverdale) led Salem International at the plate with two hits, including a double, and two RBI in the loss.

The Tigers will play their first "home" games of the season at Frank Loria Park in Nutter Fort, West Virginia this Friday, April 15 when they host Cedarville for the first of two doubleheaders at noon.
