BOYDS, Md. (Sept. 10) – A goal by sophomore
Emilio Marti (Madrid, Spain/IES Colmenarejo) in the 16th minute of the match proved to be enough, as the Tigers defeated District of Columbia 1-0 Saturday afternoon at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
The Salem International men's soccer team improves to 1-2 this season with the win, while UDC drops to 0-3 overall.
Salem International controlled the pace early in the match. The Tigers had multiple corner kicks in the first 10 minutes and a shot by sophomore
Danny Carnalla (Whittier, Calif./California) in the 14th minute sailed wide left. Less than two minutes later, a foul by UDC about 30 yards from the goal allowed Marti to bury a direct kick from the left side to put Salem International on top, 1-0.
The Tigers played superior defense throughout the match, limiting quality scoring opportunities for UDC. Despite being outshot 19-6, only five attempts were on-goal, including none in the second half. Junior goalkeeper
Dom Gillespie (Whitley Bay, England/Whitley Bay) made all five stops to record his second-career shutout for Salem International.
The Tigers are back on the pitch Tuesday, September 13 when they renew their rivalry with Ohio Valley at 3:30 p.m. in Vienna, West Virginia.
