SALEM, WV - A low-scoring first-half foiled any plans for the Salem International University women's basketball team to earn its third win of the season against Central State University on Thursday night (Jan. 12). The Marauders, led by 13 points from Hillary Dietahin, would come-away with an 89-33 victory against the Tigers in NCAA Division II women's basketball action.
Sophomore guard
Jiahna Flood-Francis scored a game-high 14 points and six steals for SIU, while senior forward
Franchessca Gill tallied eight points and five rebounds off of the bench for the Tigers. SIU will hit the road for a pair of games against Alderson Broaddus (Jan. 25) and New York Institute of Technology (Jan. 30) before opening a three-game home-stand on Feb. 1 against Rio Grande (OH) at 5:30 p.m.
A slow start would put the Tigers behind the eight-ball early in the contest as SIU went just 1-of-10 from the floor in the first quarter of action. Sophomore
Imari Bowers connected from downtown for the Tigers lone bucket. CSU went 7-of-18 from the floor in the quarter, led by a 3-for-4 effort from Jasmin Dancy and her six points. The Marauders forced the Tigers into six turnovers, while CSU committed four turnovers.
The Marauders would up the ante in the second quarter, dropping 25 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the floor. SIU turned the ball over nine-times in the second quarter, resulting in 13 points for Central State. Ghameerah McCullers recorded a team-high five steals for CSU in the first-half, while Dancy finished the half with eight points for the Marauders.
SIU tallied nine points in the second quarter to close the gap to 39-12.
The second-half would continue to be the same for the Marauders as they tallied 27 points in third quarter and 23 in the fourth quarter. Both teams would give the ball to the other side in the second-half with CSU finishing the contest with a total of 16 turnovers and SIU with 27. The Marauders would have four players hit double-digits in scoring as Dancy (12), Mustafa Notter (10), and Tamara Sellers (11) combined in the offensive effort.
The Tigers would finish the contest on a positive note, going 6-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-11 from downtown. CSU out-scored SIU 58-10 inside the paint and 19-7 in second chance points. The Marauders, led by eight rebounds from Dancy and Notter, out-rebounded SIU 48-25. The Tigers went 4-of-7 at the free-throw line, while CSU went 11-of-20.
