FROSTBURG, MD - Despite dropping their first meet of 2017, the Salem International University men's and women's swim teams continued to show progress on Saturday afternoon (Jan.14) against the Frostburg State Bobcats. The Bobcats were victorious 100-21 on the men's side and 106-13 on the women's side.
The SIU men's squad earned a fourth-place finish in the men's 200 meter medley relay as sophomore
Inigo Velasco, sophomore Roland Maldonado, freshman
Milos Popovic, and freshman
Robert Juhas finished with a time of 2:07.62.
In the 800 meter freestyle, Velasco swam to a fifth-place finish with a time of 10:50.15. He also placed fourth in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:30.48). Junior
Chad Doerrman brought home a fourth-place finish (2:17.15) in the 200 meter freestyle.
Juhas had the highest-placing on the afternoon for SIU, finishing second in the 50 meter freestyle (25.66). Popovic placed fifth in the same event with a time of 26.71.
The women's squad saw freshman
Alexia Haislop bring home a fourth-place finish in the 100 meter backstroke with a time of 1:17.58. She also placed fourth in the 200 meter breaststroke (2:46.11).
Freshman
Olivia Fickes finished fifth in the 200 meter freestyle (2:51.48) while junior
Audrey Jones finished sixth in the same event (2:55.34). Fickes also finished fifth in the 50 meter freestyle (32.07) and just ahead of junior
Alyssa Discepola (36.65).
SIU is back in the pool on Saturday night (Jan. 21) as the Tigers face the Senators from Davis & Elkins at 6 p.m. in Elkins, West Virginia.
