Men's Soccer defeats Slippery Rock University 2-1

Head Coach Florin Marton earns 100th win at Salem University

Lurking near the sideline, Mateo Gutierrez, Diego Rius Millotte and Fabricio Costa ran a quick break towards Salem University Tigers Men's Soccer Head Coach Florin Marton.

With precision and speed, the Tigers snuck up on Marton, showering him with icy water from the water jug in celebration.

The celebration was one of three perfectly executed plays on day, giving the Tigers a 2-1 victory over Slippery Rock University and Marton his 100th victory as head coach of Salem University's men's soccer team.

The first of the three plays came on a beautiful display of passing, with Vitor Teixeria finding Bryan Orta on the right side of the box from the middle of the field with a perfectly weighted ball. Orta, in turn, crossed the ball to Mark Ferenczi-Bako for the match's first goal, roughly four minutes in.

Salem controlled most of the action in the first half, getting 12 shots while limiting Slippery Rock to just two attempts on goal. A Salem foul two minutes in, however, gave Slippery Rock's Patrick Sullivan a penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1 heading into halftime.

Almost 15 minutes into the second half, Federico Toschi found Sjoerd Schobbers on the left side with an angle for a one-on-one opportunity against Slippery Rock's goalie.

Running full tilt, Schobbers managed to get the ball over the diving goalie's arms, but hit the post. Undeterred, Schobbers followed his shot, moving past the fallen goalie and sending the rebound into the back of the empty net.

With the win, the Tigers improve to 7-3-2 on the season, including a 4-1-1 record at home. Salem University's next match will be on Oct.15 against Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio.
