Box Score SALEM, W. Va. (Oct. 3, 2017) – The Salem International University (SIU) Tigers women's soccer team's last second attempt sailed high as they lost to Glenville State College (GSC) 2-1.
With the last precious seconds ticking off the clock,
Elizabeth Tamez sprinted to the baseline to setup one last corner kick. Her booming shot sailed true to the front of the net, but in the chaos of the scrum, one last header was deflected, falling harmlessly out of bounds as time ran out.
The Tigers struck first, getting a goal from
Kelsea Freiling on a penalty kick after drawing a foul at the front of the net 33 minutes into the match.
Glenville State College answered with less than two minutes remaining in the first half when Sharifa Sharif broke free in the right corner, creating a two-on-one, drawing out goalie
Emily Pontiakos and dumping the ball to Julia Lesko for the score.
Lesko scored against almost 80 minutes in the match on direct free kick after a Tigers' penalty, scoring from distance on the left side, sending an arching shot to the top right corner into the back of the net.
For the game, the Tigers got 15 shots, including nine on goal, but only four in the second half. Pontiakos had seven saves for the Tigers as both teams had several shots hit the posts or crossbar in a one-point game.
The Tigers will play SIU's homecoming game on Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. at Catalano Stadium.
