Early lead and late heroics not enough for SIU Softball

Tigers drop doubleheader against Seton Hill, 4-3 & 4-1

GREENSBURG, PA - A three-run lead in game one slipped-away from the Salem International University Tigers on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 25) against Seton Hill University. The Griffins scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to rally for a 4-3 victory over the Tigers. Seton Hill completed the sweep of SIU with a 4-1 win in game two.

Sunday's home doubleheader against Kentucky Wesleyan College has been canceled due to impending weather. The Tigers will look to reschedule their Pink-Out Game that was scheduled against Kentucky Wesleyan. SIU returns home to host Davis & Elkins on Tuesday, March 28 at 2 & 4 p.m. at Hope Field. The Tigers finish the month of March with a road-doubleheader on Thursday, March 30 at 2 & 4 p.m. against the Hilltoppers of West Liberty University.

In game one, the Tigers would take a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning against the Griffins. Junior pitcher Kayla Lynch started the inning with a double and would move over to third base two batters later as freshman Rosey Romick delivered a single. A single from senior Vanessa Jimenez loaded the bases for SIU and setup the opportunity for junior Tori Butler to promptly clear them with her double.

Lynch would keep the Tigers in control of the game until the Griffins started to claw their way back in the bottom of the fourth inning. After a lead-off double in the frame, a two-run home run by Seton Hill would cut the SIU lead in half, 4-2. Seton Hill kept their foot on the pedal, knotting the game 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning. A pair of ground-outs to third base allowed the Griffins to plate both of their runs in the frame.

Looking to even the score in the top of the seventh inning, freshman Naomi Smout reached base with a one-out pinch-hit single for the Tigers. With two outs in the frame, Butler worked a walk that would move the potential tying run into scoring position for SIU. Junior Hanna Crew, who delivered a game-winning hit earlier in the season for SIU, tried her best to do so again with a single into center field. This time luck wouldn't be on the side of the Tigers as Perez, who pinch-ran for Smout was thrown-out at home plate by the Griffins to end the game.

Lynch (4-8) was dealt with the loss for SIU, surrendering four runs on eight hits over six innings of work. She also walked four batters and fanned one. Six different Tigers recorded a hit in the game, while Jimenez, Lynch, and Romick each scored a run for SIU.

Game two started in favor of the Griffins, who plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning against junior starter Katie Holestin. The frame featured six hits for Seton Hill, who left the bases loaded after grounding into a fielder's choice at third base.

SHU extended its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single to right field. The opportunity was setup by a pair of SIU errors in the inning and would end on a line-out to second base.

Butler started a rally for the Tigers in the top of the fourth inning, lacing a double to left field. A groundout to second would advance Butler to third base and allow her to score on a single from junior Ariana Garcia. Trailing 4-1, Crew hit a bloop-single into center field to give SIU runners on first and second. With two outs in the frame, SHU got out of the jam by getting a fly ball to right field from freshman Morgan Atkinson.

Atkinson kicked-off the top of the seventh inning with a single with a single to left field but would be stranded at second base after SHU the three outs it needed to finish the game and preserve the 4-1 victory.

Holestin (3-7) took the loss for the Tigers after allowing four runs on 11 hits through six innings of work. She walked two batter and fanned two, while five different Tigers tallied a hit in the contest.
