PARKERSBURG, WV - Freshman shortstop
Tyler Ault finished the day 4-for-7 at the plate for Salem International University but the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots flexed its offensive muscle in earning a doubleheader sweep of the Tigers. OVU was victorious in game one 14-5 and 7-2 in game two.
Ault scored a total of four runs on the day and was responsible for driving in one run for SIU. Senior
Donato Gallano also had a three-hit day for the Tigers with one RBI.
In game one, the Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Ault doubled to left field against OVU starter Charles Emery. Two batters later senior Matt Flores singled up the middle to plate Ault from third base. With two outs in the frame, sophomore
Steven Craddock singled down the right field to put runners on the corners. SIU successfully pulled-off a double steal to up the lead to 2-0.
Sophomore
Michael Rupp worked a clean bottom of the first inning against OVU in his second-career start for the Tigers. The SIU offense would spot Rupp another run in the bottom of the second inning. Senior
Sean Deviney singled to right center to start the inning and would eventually find his way to third base after a single from senior
Josh VanMeter. Deviney would score on a sacrifice-fly to center field by Ault to make it 3-0.
OVU got to Rupp and the Tigers in the bottom of the second inning to erase a 3-0 lead. A double down the right field line plated a pair of runs to trim the deficit to 3-2. One batter later a single up the middle knotted the score 3-3. A sacrifice-fly would give the Fighting Scots a 4-3 lead.
The 4-3 score held until the bottom of the fourth inning as OVU rallied for six runs against SIU reliever
Albert Cartenuto. A pair of two-RBI hits highlighted the frame for the Fighting Scots, who upped their lead to 10-3.
OVU then plated four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning against SIU reliever
Jordan Wagner. Nick Villazon singled to left center to cap the scoring in the inning for the Fighting Scots and make it 14-4.
SIU would score a run in the top of the seventh inning as Gallano singled to right field to score Ault and make it 14-5.Â
In game two, OVU scored all-seven of its runs over the first three innings to take command of the contest.Â
The Tigers scored a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Flores worked a bases-loaded walk to score sophomore
Isaiah Arroyo. Deviney then singled through the right side to score Ault to cut the deficit to 4-2 at the time.
Sophomore Josh Delaney, VanMeter, Craddock, and Rupp combined to keep the Fighting Scots off of the scoreboard from the fourth inning until the end of the game. Vaughn Wiggins would go the complete distance for the Fighting Scots, calming down after the top of the third inning.Â
