SALEM, WV - Three seniors were honored prior to the start of game two between the Salem International University Tigers and Bluefield State College Blues on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 15) at Hope Field. The Tigers were victorious in game one, 8-0 (six innings) and 11-0 in game two (five innings).
Kayla Lynch highlighted her senior day by tossing a perfect game for the Tigers. At the plate, Lynch reached base once on a fielder's choice and recorded a stolen base. Lynch fanned eight Bluefield batters over six innings of work.
Freshman
Morgan Atkinson started the bottom of the first inning with a triple to right field against Bluefield starter Emily Day. Atkinson would then score on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 SIU. Junior
Hanna Crew followed with a one-out double to right field and would score as junior
Ariana Garcia laced a double of her own to left center, making it 2-0.
Freshman
Sydney McPherson singled to right field with Garcia on third base to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead in the frame. The scoring would stick as Lynch hit a hard line drive to third for the final-out.
The Tigers doubled their lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the second inning as Atkinson and Jimenez each recorded RBI base hits. Jimenez also scored from second after a wild pitch got away from Bluefield catcher Lauryn Hatfield.
Day settled in against the SIU offense after making it out of the second inning, holding the Tigers scoreless in the third and fourth innings.Â
SIU stretched its lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI bunt single from sophomore
Jordan Whitaker. Garcia reached on a fielding error in the bottom of the sixth inning that plated Jimenez to make it 8-0 and give the Tiger the victory.
Lynch finished the game with 74 pitches and recorded four fly-outs and six ground-outs. SIU also recorded a season-high eight stolen bases in the game as Garcia paced the Tigers with three swipes. Garcia finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored.
In game two, the Tigers would bat around in the first inning against the Blues and score eight runs in the process. SIU scored three runs in the frame thanks to wild pitches from Bluefield State. Freshman Rosey Romick highlighted the frame with a two-RBI single through the left side.
Romick tallied another RBI in the bottom of the second inning with a single up the middle to score Garcia and make it 9-0 SIU. In the bottom of the third inning, Garcia doubled down the left field line to plate Crew and Jimenez to give the Tigers an 11-0 lead.
Junior pitcher
Katie Holestin had her no-hitter snapped in the top of the fifth inning with two outs as Tyann Thomas hit a single to center field. Holestin would end the game one batter later as she got a ground-out to first base to preserve the 11-0 victory.
