Box Score 4 ATHENS, W.Va. (Sept. 9, 2017) – The Salem International University (SIU) Tigers volleyball team ended its weekend winless at the Concord Classic, dropping all five of its matches over the course of three days.
vs. Shaw University
The Tigers dropped three sets (25-13, 25-18, 25-15) to Shaw University to start the Concord Classic. Shaw set the tone at the net with a 7-1 advantage in blocks to outpace the Tigers 43-27 in kills with a 5-2 edge in aces.
Rachel Hess led the Tigers with nine kills and only one error for a .387 hitting percentage while
Sophie Freihofer contributed eight.
vs. West Virginia Wesleyan College
Hess led SIU with 10 kills but dropped three straight sets (25-18, 25-20, 25-20) to fall to West Virginia Wesleyan College. The Tigers held an 28-26 advantage in kills, but committed 25 errors on 98 attempts for a .031 hitting percentage.
Wesleyan served 10 aces with Ebonie Hicks and Alexcis McCollum each serving three. Freilhofer had three for the Tigers.
vs. West Virginia University Institute of Technology
SIU lost to the West Virginia University Institute of Technology (WVUIT) Golden Bears in three sets, 25-17, 25-15, 25-13.
The Golden Bears posted a 40-20 advantage in kills, committing 14 errors on 97 attacks for a .268 hitting percentage. SIU committed 15 errors on 84 attacks for a .060 hitting percentage.
Hess and Freilhofer tied for the team lead in kills with five each.
Nina Isaac had four blocks and
Cassidy Pluta had nine assists for the Tigers. Ana Monteiro had 11 kills and Konstantina Pateli had 32 assists for the Golden Bears.
vs. Ohio Valley University
The Tigers struggled to find gaps in the Ohio Valley University (OVU) defense, failing to register double digit kills in any of the match's three sets, losing 25-14, 25-11, 25-15.
Hess and Freilhofer lead the team with seven kills each and
Jen Foreman served three aces. Fa'aaliga Mikaele and Jessica Rafay led OVU with 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
Salem struggled to control OVU's serves, giving up 10 aces, including six from Maria Cordoba. The Tigers' also committed 16 errors on 70 attacks for a .063 hitting percentage.
vs. Concord
Salem closed its weekend dropping all three sets (25—15, 25-20, 25-19) against Concord, bringing its record to 2-7 on the season.
Hess led the team with 10 kills, Foreman had 22 digs and
Feliciana Reed had 17 assists. Brooke Heck led Concord with 11 kills. Concord was more efficient, posting a .210 to .083 advantage in hitting percentage.
The Tigers will host Alderson Broaddus University for their first home game of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. and West Virginia State University on Sept. 13 at 7 p.m.
