PIKEVILLE, Ky. – An early goal from sophomore
Federico Toschi aided the Salem University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win at Pikeville, Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Tigers push to 6-5-2, while Pikeville falls to 8-6.
Salem controlled the match as it managed to muster 14 shots with eight on goal, whereas Pikeville only generated six goals with two on goal.
Freshman
Bernardo Santos kept a clean sheet for the second-straight match, notching two saves in the contest.
In the second minute of the match, sophomore
Nikklas Roessler garnered the Tigers first opportunity for a goal as his shot was saved by Pikeville's keeper Anibal Navarro.
At 15:50, the contests only goal was netted by Toschi as he scored off a dropped ball by Pikeville's Navarro.
Early in the second half, Toschi had a chance for a second goal as he kicked a shot that was just high and it beamed off the crossbar.
With just 35 seconds remaining in the match, Santos saved a potential game-tying goal from Pikeville.
The Tigers are back in action Tuesday as they host Walsh (Ohio) for a match set for a 3:00 p.m. start.
