SALEM, W.Va. – The Salem University volleyball team rolled past Bluefield 3-0 and controlled Central State 3-1, Friday.
With the two wins, the Tigers improve to 7-20 on the season.
Game One
In the first match of the day, Salem breezed past Bluefield State in just three sets (25-11, 25-11, 25-9).
The Tigers dominated the stat sheet as they led in kills (26-11), aces (16-3), blocks (6-0), assists (26-11) and digs (36-27).
Salem was led by junior
Liane Moser who produced a game-high seven kills, while senior
Cassidy Pluta notched a game-high 12 assists, five aces and added a team-high eight digs.
Sophomore
Nina Isaac accounted for three blocks, as freshman
Jalavia Johnson accumulated four kills, two blocks and five digs.
In the second set, Bluefield State notched the first point of the set off a kill by Shymonique Williams, but the Tigers came roaring back to score the next twelve points to take a commanding 12-1 lead to start the set.
Game Two
In the nightcap, the Tigers battled with Central State and earned a hard-fought 3-1 victory (25-16, 29-31, 25-22, 25-21).
Salem notched 14 blocks, whereas Central State generated nine. The Tigers also led in kills (50-39), assists (50-38) and digs (89-82).
Moser once again led the Tigers in kills as she notched a match-high 15, while Isaac recorded an impressive match-high 10 blocks.
Freshman
Amy Turbak added 22 digs and five assists, while Pluta put forth 27 assists.
In the first set, Salem jumped out to an 11-3 lead after a kill by senior
Kathryne Mathis assisted by Pluta. The Marauders scored eight straight to cut the Tigers lead to 15-14.
The set was led by the Tigers 20-16, as Salem notched five-straight points to take the first set 25-16.
In the second set, neither team wanted to surrender defeat as they were trading points back and forth until eventually, Central State took the set 31-29.
Salem, won the next two sets off some impressive plays to end the match with a 3-1 victory.
The Tigers are back in action Tuesday as they travel to South Euclid, Ohio for a tri-match against Notre Dame (Ohio) at 3:00 p.m. and Lake Erie at 5:00 p.m.
