SALEM, W.Va. – Senior
Malik Toppin and sophomore
Shawn Christian combined for 56 points and 23 rebounds as the Salem University men's basketball team cruised past Carlow (Pa.) 111-79 for the second time this season, Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Tigers jump to 6-2 on the year, while Carlow drops to 1-13.
Salem shot lights-out in the first half as it was 60.98 percent (25-41) from the field and 70.59 percent (12-17) from behind the arc, while the Tigers shot 54.5 percent (42-77) for the game and 53.6 percent (15-28) from three.
The Tigers were able to capitalize off of Carlow's turnovers as Salem netted 34 points off of Carlow's 21 turnovers, while Carlow scored just 10 points off of the Tigers' 13 turnovers.
Toppin paced the Tigers with his fourth double-double of the season as he recorded a game-high 30 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, while Christian netted 26 points and grabbed six rebounds.
This marks the second time that Christian has knocked-down eight three-pointers in a single contest. Christian currently leads the nation in threes made with 42.
Two other Tigers scored double digits, as junior
Jesse Pistokache netted 13 points and junior
Malique Ross added 11 with a game-high eight assists.
Toppin scored seven of the Tigers first 10 points, as Salem led Carlow 10-2 in the early going with 17:47 left in the first half.
Salem opened up its lead with four back-to-back three-pointers as Christian knocked down two, senior
Marko Tutunovic hit one and Pistokache made his three to expand the lead to 18 (29-11) at 13:23 in the first half.
With 39 seconds remaining in the first half, freshman
Fonz Hale knocked down a three to give the Tigers their largest lead of the half at 35 (67-32).
At 13:36 in the second half, Toppin hammered home a powerful dunk to bump the Salem lead to 38 (83-45).
Salem held its largest lead of the game of 44 with 11:27 left in the contest as Hale connected on a layup for a 91-47 advantage.
Carlow outscored the Tiger 32-30 in the last 11:27 of the game, as Salem easily held on for the win.
The Tigers are back in action Tuesday as they travel to Alderson Broaddus with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m.
