SALEM, W.Va. – The Salem University women's basketball team was clipped by Charleston 65-59, Wednesday afternoon at T. Edward Davis Gymnasium.
With the loss, the Tigers drop to 2-10, while Charleston improves to 10-1 on the year.
A major storyline in the contest was that Charleston had several more chances at the free throw line and attempted 35 free throws to Salem's 12, which all the attempts came in the second half.
The Tigers outrebounded Charleston 40-35, grabbing 18 offensive rebounds, while the Tigers posted 13-second-chance points to Charleston's six. Salem's bench also outscored Charleston's bench 16-9.
Salem's scoring was led by freshman
Daniela Quesada-Villalobos who notched a team-high 12 points and recorded two rebounds, while junior
Endia Jones scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. No other Tiger eclipsed double-digits.
With 6:24 remaining in the first quarter junior
Precious Price connected with a three to give the Tigers a 10-9 advantage.
In the second quarter, freshman
Nia Bishop hit a layup with 5:07 remaining in the half to cut the Charleston lead down to 18-16, but the Tigers trailed 27-23 at the intermission.
In the third quarter, the Tigers stayed within seven points throughout the quarter and with 1:32 remaining in the third quarter, Price finished a layup to bring the Tigers within four, 46-42.
Early in the fourth quarter, Quesada-Villalobos knocked down a shot from behind the arc to cut Charleston's lead to 48-47 with 7:32 left in the game. The Tigers hung around but could not get over the hump as the fell just short 65-59.
Charleston was led by Raziyah Farrington and Dionna Sanders as they had 23 and 20 points, respectively. Sanders finished with a double-double grabbing 11 rebounds.
The Tigers will take a short break and return to action in 2019, as they travel to Concord on January 3
rd for a 2:00 p.m. tip.
