CHARLESTON, W. Va. (March 3, 2018) – Rounding the final turn into one last straightaway, Salem University Tigers track and field's Julia Nilsson found herself side-by-side with Ohio Valley University's Mevin Chelanga, matching her step-for-step.

Just feet from the finish line, Nilsson hit the proverbial runner's wall, slowing just a half step, allowing Chelanga and Mary Baldwin's Sonje Green to overtake her; finishing third in the third heat at the women's 800 Meter Run.

Nilsson posted a time of 2:52.23, showing how far she's come and the improvement still yet to come. A few seconds later, teammate Cerise Dingiswayo crossed the finish line at the 3:02.55 mark, joining Nilsson on the sideline.

Four of Salem's track and field women competed in the University of Charleston's Seventh Annual Golden Eagle Invitational to kickoff the outdoor season.

Jasmine Telani made the shot-put finals, finishing with a best throw of 10.10m in six attempts, finishing eighth out of 20. Donjai Upshaw competed in the 100 Meters Finals, finishing fourth with a time of 13.11.

Salem's next meet will be in California, Pennsylvania against the University of California (Pennsylvania) on March 24.
