KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Salem University volleyball team fell short against Kutztown 3-0 and N.Y. Institute of Technology 3-1 in the second day of the Kutztown Classic, Friday.
GAME ONE
The Golden Bears took all three sets against the Tigers (25-13, 25-19, 25-14) in the first matchup of the morning.
Salem led Kutztown in digs 34-29, whereas the Golden Bears had the advantage in kills (37-22), assists (33-20) and aces (9-3).
Senior
Cassidy Pluta led the team with 11 assists, while senior
Kathryne Mathis recorded a team-high 12 digs. Sophomore
Nina Isaac finished the match with a team-high of eight kills.
The Tigers started the first and third set off strong with three-straight points in the first, followed by four-straight points in the third set. However, Salem surrendered the sets and Kutztown claimed the victory.
GAME TWO
In the second game, Salem had a strong first set, winning 25-21, but NYIT notched the advantage winning three-straight sets (25-20, 25-12, 25-13) to claim the victory.
The Tigers were led by Mathis who recorded 11 kills, 17 digs and a hitting percentage of .276. Pluta added a team-high 15 assists, while freshman
Kira Lilly and Isaac both notched a match-high three blocks.
Salem edged the Bears in digs (65-61) and block assists (8-6), while the Bears led the Tigers in kills (48-30) and hitting percentage (.163-.065).
In the first set, trailing the Bears 18-14, the Tigers garnered five straight points to take a 19-18 advantage. NYIT proceeded to score two, giving it a 20-19 edge, but the Tigers answered notching five-straight again to take a 24-20 lead. This aided Salem to the 25-21 set win.
The Tigers are back in action Tuesday as they travel to West Liberty for a tri-match against Alderson-Broaddus at 5:00 p.m. and West Liberty at 7:00 p.m.
