Salem Drops Two in WLU Tri-Match

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Salem University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to Alderson Broaddus 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 26-24) and West Liberty 3-0 (25-10, 25-23, 25-10), Tuesday evening. 

 
GAME ONE
 
In the first match of the evening, Alderson Broaddus led Salem in every major statistical category including aces (12-3), assists (39-24), digs (52-48) and kills (40-25), while the Tigers and Battlers tied in blocks with two apiece. 
 
Sophomore Alaina Weltz led the Tigers with 11 assists, 11 digs and one ace, while classmate Nina Isaac notched seven kills and senior Kathryne Mathis added 12 digs. 

 
Alderson Broaddus was led by Ashlyn McDonald who posted a match-high 18 kills.
 
In the third set, Salem jumped out to an impressive 17-7 lead, but the Battlers went on a 19-7 run to edge the Tigers 26-24. 
 
GAME TWO 
 
In the nightcap, West Liberty recorded 46 digs, while Salem generated 30.
 
In the second set of the match, the Tigers accounted for seven errors, whereas the Hilltoppers recorded ten. 

 
Salem was led by Mathis who garnered six digs, three kills, two assists and one block, while Weltz led the team with six assists. 

 
The Hilltoppers were led by Kendall Souder and Raimey Benson who had 25 assists and ten kills respectively. 

 
In the second set, Salem trailed 19-12, but after a 5-0 run off a service ace from senior Cassidy Pluta and a kill by Mathis cut the Hilltoppers lead to just 19-17. West Liberty edged the Tigers 25-23 for the set win. 
 
The Tigers are back in play Friday as they travel to West Chester for the two-day Ram Fest with a match against Fairmont State at 2:00 p.m. and Franklin Pierce at 4:00 p.m.
