WEST CHESTER, Pa.- The Salem University volleyball team suffered two losses on the first day of the West Chester Ram Fest against Fairmont State 3-2 and Franklin Pierce 3-0, Friday afternoon.
GAME ONE
The Tigers and Falcons battled back and forth during the match, but Salem endured a loss on the last set as Fairmont came out with a 3-2 win (21-25, 25-22, 12-25, 25-23, 8-15).
Salem led Fairmont in digs 61-58, while the Falcons took over in kills (58-43), assists (165-143) and aces (49-40). Each team finished with eight block assists.
Junior
Liane Moser led the team with 13 kills and sophomore
Alaina Weltz recorded a team-high 25 assists, while freshman
Amy Turbak had a game-high 20 digs.
The Tigers fought hard in the second and fourth set as Salem took its largest lead of the day in the second set, a four-point advantage. In the fourth set, freshman
Jalavia Johnson earned the Tigers final point and kill of the set to tie the match 2-2.
GAME TWO
In game two against Franklin Pierce, Salem came up short in three sets (25-21, 25-21, 25-13).
The Tigers were led by Johnson who had nine kills and a hitting percentage of .368, Turbak who had a team-high ten digs and Weltz notched her second 25 assist match of the day.
Salem led Franklin Pierce in blocks 6-1, while the Ravens led in every other major category including digs (43) and kills (39).
The Tigers continue play tomorrow morning in the second day of Ram Fest, with a match against West Chester at 10:00 a.m. and Goldey-Beacom at 12:00 p.m.
