Tigers Struggle at Home

SALEM, W.Va. - The Salem University volleyball team dropped two contests 3-0 to Notre Dame (Ohio) and 3-0 to Point Park (Pa.) on Mike Carey Court, Tuesday.
 
Game One
 
In the first match, the Tigers fell in three-straight sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-13) to Notre Dame.
 
The Falcons led the Tigers in kills 37-13, assists 36-12, digs 62-43 and aces 7-1, while Salem and Notre Dame tied with seven blocks each.
 
The Tigers were led by freshman Jalavia Johnson who notched a match-high four blocks and added three kills and one ace, while junior Liane Moser tallied 10 digs, three kills and one assist.
 
Salem had its largest lead of the match in the first set as it scored five straight for a 12-7 advantage. The Falcons went on an 18-6 run to take set one 25-18.
 
Game Two
 
In the nightcap, Salem dropped the match to Point Park in three straight sets (25-10, 25-15, 25-23).
 
The Pioneers led Salem in every major statistical category including kills (44-13), aces (10-6), blocks (7-2), assists (44-13) and digs (48-33).
 
Point Park posted a .370 hitting percentage, while Salem boasted a .013 percentage.  
 
Johnson led the Tigers attack with four kills, two aces and one block, while senior Cassidy Pluta generated 12 assists.
 
Senior Kathryne Mathis stepped-up and stepped in as the libero for Tigers after an injury to freshman Amy Turbak. Mathis contributed with eight diggs, while junior Liane Moser also added in eight digs. 

The Pioneers were led by Ashley Taylor who notched a match-high 15 kills and Julia Menosky who added a match-high 22 assists.
 
In the third set, the Tigers jumped out to a 5-2 lead on the Pioneers capped-off by an attack error from Point Park. Salem trailed 18-12 but went on an 11-5 run to tie the set 23-23. The Pioneers scored the next two points to take the set 25-23.
 
The Tigers are back in play Saturday as they travel to Grayson, Ky. To compete in a tri-match against Asbury at 1:00 p.m. and Kentucky Christian at 3:00 p.m.
