INSTITUTE, W.Va.- The Salem University volleyball team split with a win against Appalachian Bible 3-1 and fell to West Virginia State 3-0.
With the split, Salem moves to 4-18.
Game One
The Tigers started the first match off with a loss to the Warriors (25-23), but bounced back the next three sets (25-20, 25-15, 25-16) for the 3-1 win.
Salem led Appalachian Bible in blocks (11-4), aces (8-4) and kills (42-40), while the Warriors led the Tigers in digs (87-79) and assist (39-36).
The Tigers were led by sophomore
Nina Isaac with 13 kills and nine blocks, while senior
Cassidy Pluta put up 24 assists and two aces. Senior
Waverly Federico contributed to the team a team high of 21 digs on the night.
Salem had its largest lead in the fourth set leading the Warriors 17-10. That run included kills from freshman
Yesenia Munoz and freshman
Autumn Southern, along with an assisted block by Isaac and Pluta.
Game Two
The Tigers fell to the Yellow Jackets in the nightcap in three sets (25-10, 25-7, 25-12).
Salem led State in blocks 7-6, but came up short in every other major statistical category including digs (47-31), aces (6-1) and kills (36-15).
Pluta led the team with eight digs and eight assists. Senior
Kathryne Mathis and Munoz each added three kills each.
West Virginia State was led by Jenna Dufresne and Gabrielle Bullock with eight kills a piece.
The Salem volleyball team travels to Montgomery, W.Va. to compete in a tri-match between Washington Adventist
at 3:00 p.m. and West Virginia Tech
at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday.
