BECKLEY, W.Va. –The Salem University volleyball team dominated Washington Adventist 3-0 and fell to West Virginia University Institute of Technology 3-0, Tuesday.
With the split, the Tigers improve their record to 5-19.
Game One
In the first match of the day, Salem defeated Washington Adventist in three-straight sets (27-25, 25-9, 25-11).
The Tigers controlled every major statistical category including kills (33-12), aces (13-5), blocks (6-4), assists (25-8) and digs (42-41).
Salem also posted a .174 hitting percentage, while Washington Adventist hit at -.095.
Freshman
Jalavia Johnson tallied a match-high seven kills, while senior
Cassidy Pluta notched a match-high 22 assists and a match-high six aces. Pluta also added seven digs.
Senior
Kathryne Mathis and sophomore
Alaina Weltz each generated 10 digs for the Tigers.
In the second set, the Tigers started the set off hot on a 16-0 run. They finished the set on a 5-0 run as the score was 21-9, to end the set 25-9 and take a 2-0 match lead.
Game Two
In the second match, Salem dropped the contest in three-straight to WVU Tech (10-25, 11-25, 9-25).
The Tigers struggled in the second match, as the Golden Bears lead in every statistical category. Salem fell short in points (57-20), kills (47-15), aces (4-1), blocks (6-4), assists (41-11) and digs (53-25).
The Golden Bears notched a .513 hitting percentage for the match.
The Tigers were led by Mathis as she recorded four kills and four digs, while Weltz accounted for seven digs and five assists.
Salem earned the first point in all three sets but was unable to capitalize as it fell in three sets.
The Tigers are back in action Tuesday as they travel to Frankfort, Ky. for a tri-match against Kentucky State at 1:00 p.m. followed by a match versus Oakland City at 3:00 p.m.
