Mark Ferenczi-Bako scored his fourth goal in three matches, but Salem University fell to Frostburg State University 2-1 in NCAA Division II men's soccer Saturday at Frostburg, Md. The loss snapped the Tigers' two-match winning streak.
Salem (4-6-1) narrowly missed getting on the scoreboard in the 39th minute on back-to-back shots by
Bas De Waal and
Jordan Lau. Frostburg State goalkeeper Joel Assal deflected De Waal's shot and Lau's attempt off the rebound was stopped by a Bobcat defender.
The Tigers used a Bobcat foul to break the deadlock at the 42:00 mark. Ferenczi-Bako put home the ensuing free kick and Salem went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Frostburg State (4-6-1) held the statistical advantage in the first half, outshooting Salem 7-6 and holding a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. But the Bobcats were also flagged for offside six times in the first half and 11 times overall.
The Bobcats evened the match six-plus minutes into the second half on a goal by Youness Benmouna. Frostburg State took the lead for good at the 65:23 mark on another goal by Benmouna.
Salem nearly tied the match 77 seconds later when Dean William Davies drew the Bobcat keeper off his line. Davies' shot rolled just left of the post.
Frostburg State appeared to take a two-goal lead in the 70th minute on Benmouna's header off a throw-in, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Another Bobcat shot hit the crossbar and Salem goalkeeper
Luis Felipe Ramirez made a leaping save on a shot headed for the upper 90 to keep the Tigers within a goal.
But Salem had only one more shot attempt over the final 15 minutes. The Tigers' last offensive challenge came on a free kick just inside midfield in the 88th minute.
The Tigers were outshot 15-11 for the match and each team was limited to one corner kick in the second half. Ramirez finished with four saves.
Salem returns to action Tuesday as the Tigers play host to Mercyhurst University. Match time is 3 p.m. at Catalano Stadium.
