Salem University held Mercyhurst University scoreless for more than 70 minutes, but two goals in a span of 40 seconds were the difference as the Tigers fell to the Lakers 2-1 in NCAA Division II men's soccer Tuesday at Catalano Stadium. Dean William Davies scored the Tigers' goal.
Salem (4-7-1) jumped out to an early lead when Davies won the ball inside the Mercyhurst third and slipped past the Laker keeper to put the Tigers on top 1-0 at the 7:22 mark. The goal was Davies' second of the season.
The Tigers held Mercyhurst without a shot attempt for more than 30 minutes. Defender Mark Cobel prevented a scoring chance in the 10th minute with a takeaway from behind in the box. Goalkeeper
Luis Felipe Ramirez tipped the Lakers' lone shot attempt over the crossbar in the 32nd minute to help preserve Salem's one-goal lead at halftime.
A Mercyhurst red card near the end of the first half gave Salem a man advantage and the Tigers narrowly missed adding to their lead less than three minutes into the second half. Laker goalkeeper Alfredo Gallo made a diving save on a Tiger penalty kick, then made another save 24 seconds later on a shot from inside the box.
Mercyhurst (4-2-2) evened the match at the 71:26 mark when Gustavo Requeijo scored from 12 yards out into an open left side of the goal off a cross from the right side. A scramble in the box led to the go-ahead goal 40 seconds later when Zach Martin put home a loose ball from 10 yards out.
Salem was held without a shot for the remainder of the match.
The Tigers outshot Mercyhurst 9-5 for the match. Ramirez finished with one save, while Gallo had four saves for the Lakers.
Salem has a quick turnaround as the Tigers head to Columbus, Ohio, Thursday evening to take on Ohio Dominican University. Match time is 7:30 p.m.
