Volleyball Drops Four-Set Heartbreaker Against Frostburg State

Box Score Liane Moser and Yesenia Munoz recorded 10 kills apiece and Salem University appeared headed to send the match to a fifth set, but a late rally was the difference as the Tigers fell to Frostburg State University 25-19, 18-25, 25-18, 30-28 in NCAA Division II volleyball Sunday at T. Edward Davis Gymnasium. Jalavia Johnson added nine kills and four aces.

After dropping the first set, Salem jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second set, powered by two kills and an ace by Munoz and a pair of kills by Johnson. Moser sandwiched a pair of kills around a Makhia Hinton ace as the margin ballooned to double digits at 17-7.

Frostburg State cut the lead in half before Alaina Weltz's diving one-fisted dig set up a kill by Munoz to give Salem a 24-17 lead. After a side out, Moser recorded a kill on the left side to even the match at a set apiece.

Elise Valdez's four-point service run helped Salem overcome an early deficit in the third set. Valdez served an ace and forced three attack errors in the run to give the Tigers an 8-4 lead. The Tigers still held a 12-10 advantage, but Frostburg State used a 6-0 run to take the lead for good.

Salem took a 3-0 lead in the fourth set on kills by Moser and Breslyn Argo, and an ace by Hinton. Back-to-back aces by Johnson highlighted a five-point run to give the Tigers a double-digit lead at 15-5. After the two teams exchanged a series of side outs, Hinton's kill and another ace by Johnson gave Salem a 24-13 advantage and put the Tigers within one point of forcing a fifth set.

Frostburg State saved one set point on a side out and Cori Smothers served a pair of aces during an 11-point service run to give the Bobcats a 25-24 lead. Munoz's solo block saved a match point and Moser's kill again put Salem a point away from a fifth set. But Frostburg State saved another set point and held serve to set up another match point.

The Tigers stayed in the match and set up another set point on back-to-back kills by Moser. Frostburg State again saved a set point and won the final two points to finish the match.

For the second consecutive home match, Salem established a single-match high for blocks. The Tigers compiled 14 block assists and two solo blocks for 9.0 team blocks. Munoz led all players with four blocks, while Argo and Johnson added three blocks apiece.

Weltz finished with 23 assists and Kyana Cardenas tallied 12 assists.

Salem returns to action Tuesday as the Tigers travel to Rio Grande, Ohio, to take on University of Rio Grande. Match time is 7 p.m.
