Dean William "Dixie" Davies completed his hat trick with the game-winning goal in the 96th minute as Salem University posted its second straight overtime win this week with a 4-3 victory over Shaw University in NCAA Division II men's soccer Saturday at Mylan Park in Morgantown, W. Va. Tiger defender
Peter Beverly helped set up Davies' heroics with a key defensive play early in the overtime period, preventing a near certain game-ending goal.
Although played an hour from campus, Saturday's contest was officially Salem's home finale. The Tigers honored their seniors after the match during Senior Day ceremonies.
Salem (6-8-1) held the statistical edge in the first half, outshooting Shaw 6-2. Davies put the Tigers on the board at the 19:29 mark off a service from
Mark Ferenczi-Bako, who added a goal of his own at 30:20 to give Salem a 2-0 halftime advantage. Ferenczi-Bako, who scored both goals in the Tigers' 2-1 overtime victory Wednesday at Seton Hill, has tallied at least one goal in six of his last seven and seven of his last nine matches.
Shaw (3-9-2) spoiled Salem's shutout bid and evened the match on a pair of goals four minutes apart at 63:42 and 67:41, the second goal on a free kick by Gianluca Evers. The Bears had eight of their 10 shots in the second half.
The Tigers looked like they were going to win the match in regulation with a goal at the 82:57 mark.
Siya Mfusi crossed the ball from the right side to Davies, who scored from the top of the box to put Salem back on top 3-2.
But Shaw capitalized on another foul deep in the Salem end and Evers put home another free kick with 56 seconds left in regulation and send the match into overtime.
The Bears appeared headed to winning the match in the third minute of overtime when Evers broke past the Salem defense inside the 30-yard mark. Beverly came in from the right side and took the ball away just outside the box before Evers could attempt a shot.
After narrowly missing ending the match in the 95th minute on a shot that rolled just past the left post, Davies put home the game winner less than a minute later. Davies captured a loose ball inside the Shaw third and found the angle on a shot from the right-hand side of the box clinch the win. The Tigers are 3-0 in overtime matches this season.
Salem held Shaw without a shot in overtime and finished the match with a 13-10 advantage.
Salem heads south to the Tar Heel state for a pair of matches this week. The Tigers are in Wingate, N.C., Wednesday to take on Wingate University, then head to Raleigh, N.C., Friday for a rematch against Shaw.
