Salem University held nationally 19th-ranked Wingate University to a single goal on 18 shots in the first half, but a three-goal outburst in a span of five minutes early in the second half broke the game open as the Tigers fell to the Bulldogs 5-0 in NCAA Division II men's soccer Wednesday at Wingate, N.C. The loss snapped the Tigers' two-match winning streak.
Â
After Salem (6-9-1) fell behind 1-0 just three minutes into the contest, the Tigers nearly evened the match seven minutes later. But Wingate goalkeeper Victor Spaggiari made saves on shots by Salem's top two goal scorers,
Dean William Davies and
Mark Ferenczi-Bako. The Tigers were also unable to capitalize on a corner kick opportunity.
Â
Tiger goalkeeper
Luis Felipe Ramirez kept Salem within a goal with six of his eight saves coming in the first half. Ramirez denied Wingate a goal off of a corner kick with 16 seconds left before halftime.
Â
Virtually a repeat of the opening of the first half, Wingate (9-2-2) extended its lead to 2-0 three minutes into the second half. The Bulldogs scored again at the 51:23 mark and added another goal 68 seconds later to put the match out of reach.
Â
Salem recorded five shots in the first half and was outshot by only a narrow 8-6 margin in the second half. Wingate was whistled for 16 fouls, compared to only four for Salem.

Salem wraps up its swing through the Tar Heel State Friday as the Tigers travel to Raleigh, N.C., for a rematch against Shaw University. The Tigers rode
Dean William Davies' hat trick to a 4-3 overtime victory Saturday at Mylan Park in Morgantown. Match time is 3 p.m.
