Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Rally Comes Up Short Against Shaw

Chrislyn Browne and Sophia Wortmann each scored a goal to keep Salem University close, but the Tigers fell to Shaw University 4-2 in NCAA Division II women's soccer Saturday at Mylan Park in Morgantown, W.Va. The goal was the first of the season for both Browne and Wortmann, who scored hers with just one second left in the first half.

Although played an hour from campus, Saturday's contest was officially Salem's home finale. Seniors Sydney McPherson, Tamara Queiroz and Rosey Romick were honored after the match during Senior Day ceremonies.

After allowing Shaw a goal in the 10th minute, Salem kept the Bears scoreless over the next 30 minutes. Goalkeeper Chelsea Cordice recorded four saves during that span and defender Kaylee Caswell prevented an open close-range shot after clearing a ball out of the box.

Shaw extended its lead to 2-0 at the 42:42 mark when Reid Cobb-Phillips headed in Andrea Licea's cross just inside the left post. The Bears added a goal with 15 seconds remaining in the half and appeared headed into intermission with a shutout.

Salem's restart from the circle was misplayed in the Shaw third and Wortmann capitalized. Wortmann took a touch, then shot from just above the top left of the box into an open net to pull the Tigers within 3-1 at halftime.

A Shaw penalty kick in the 66th minute gave the Bears a 4-1 lead, but midfielder Tamara Queiroz sparked a late Tiger charge. After narrowly missing scoring a goal of her own on a pair of shot attempts in a span of 55 seconds – a 20-yard shot stopped by Bears goalkeeper Shianne Duplantis and a 30-yard free kick that went just over the crossbar – Queiroz assisted on Browne's goal.

Queiroz served a corner kick from the right corner that nearly bent inside the right post and deflected off the Shaw keeper. Browne headed the ball directly off the deflection inside the left post at 85:26.

Salem won the ball back after Shaw's restart, but an offside halted another Tiger challenge.

Cordice, who ranks third in the nation in total saves, finished with 11 saves for her ninth double-digit saves performance of the season. Browne and Queiroz combined for four of the Tigers' five shots with two shots apiece.

Salem heads south to the Tar Heel state for a pair of matches this week. The Tigers are in Wingate, N.C., Wednesday to take on Wingate University, then head to Raleigh, N.C., Friday for a rematch against Shaw.
