Salem University had the potential tying goal waved off early in the second half and a pair of goals in the final 11 minutes broke open a tight match as the Tigers fell to Felician University 3-0 in NCAA Division II women's soccer Saturday at Catalano Stadium. Challenges by Chrislyn Browne,
Olivia Davoli and
Tamara Queiroz helped keep the Tigers within striking range.
Â
Browne electrified the Catalano Stadium crowd with an end-to-end run late in the first half, beating virtually Felician's entire defense. Browne dribbled the ball to the box, but Felician starting goalkeeper Jamie Kazenmayer was able to cover the ball before Browne could get another touch.
Â
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, Davoli narrowly missed tying the match early in the second half. Davoli pressured in the opening box when a Tiger service went into the box, but backup goalkeeper Brooke Garofalo got to the ball a step ahead of Davoli.
Â
Davoli appeared to have scored the tying goal less than two minutes later when Browne's service found her for a 12-yard shot in the right-hand side of the goal. But the linesperson held up the offside flag, nullifying the goal.
Â
Salem (1-8) came close again in the 70th minute when Queiroz played the ball ahead to Browne in the box. But Garofalo was able to make a save on Browne's 15-yard attempt.
Â
Felician (2-5) converted a pair of corner kicks seven minutes apart to give the Golden Falcons some breathing room. Nikki Bisesi chested a service into the back of the net at the 80th minute and Ally Krebs put home a loose ball in the box to close out the scoring.
Â
Sophia Wortman gave Salem a scoring opportunity in the fifth minute when her free kick from behind the midfield line got past the Felician defense into the box. Kazenmayer covered the ball just before a Tiger attacker got there.
Â
Felician broke a scoreless tie at the 23:02 mark when Lindsey Riera was open in the box for a 15-yarder.
Â
Tiger goalkeeper Liz Cordice, who entered Saturday's contest leading the nation in saves, added six more saves to her total. Salem's defense limited the Golden Falcons to nine shots on goal.
Â
Salem returns to action Wednesday as the Tigers travel to Johnstown, Pa., to take on University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown. Match time is 4 p.m.
