ORANGEBURG, S.C. –The Salem University baseball team earned its first win of the season as it defeated Claflin 17-4, Sunday.
With the win, the Tigers improve to 1-5, while Claflin falls to 4-3.
Salem generated 11 hits in 39 at-bats with 17 runs scored and 13 RBI with just nine left on base, while Claflin notched four hits with four runs scored but had a total of five errors.
Senior
Jimmy Cramer recorded three hits and three RBI with one run scored in six at-bats, while classmate
Harrison Hollis notched two hits and three RBI in three at-bats.
Junior
Sam Chapman is credited with the win (1-0) as he allowed four hits and three earned runs and totaled six strikeouts in six innings pitched.
The Tigers got on the board early, in the top of the first inning, sophomore
Tyler D'Alessandro crossed the plate after a throwing error on Claflin for a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, Claflin added three runs to take a 3-1 lead over the Tigers, but Salem came roaring back adding three runs of its own in the top of the second off a solo home run from junior
Dalton Robison and a Hollis double that scored junior
Tyler Ault and junior
Parker Lenivy for a 4-3 lead.
Jump to the bottom of the fifth and Claflin scored off a wild pitch to tie the game at 4-4.
The Tigers did not look back as they scored 13 unanswered runs from the sixth inning on.
The Tigers' were hot in the ninth inning as they scored eight runs to secure the 17-4 route.
Salem is back in action Saturday as it hosts its home opener against Lincoln (Pa.) for a doubleheader slated for 1:00 p.m.
