NUTTER FORT, W.Va. – The Salem University baseball team split with the University of Virginia at Wise with a 4-3 win in game one and a 10-2 loss in game two on a very windy and cold Sunday afternoon.
With the split, Salem's record holds at 5-7, while UVA-Wise is now 1-8.
In the first game, junior
Sam Chapman tossed two innings allowing just two hits and one earned run with three strikeouts.
Junior
Tyler Ault recorded two hits with three RBI and one run scored with a home run, while sophomore
Austin Whetzel notched two hits, one RBI and one run scored with a home run.
No runs were scored until the third inning, as UVA-Wise notched one run off one hit.
The Tigers answered with their own run in the bottom of the third as Ault grounded out to the third baseman but scored freshman
Michael Rosario to tie the game at 1-1.
In the top of the fourth, UVA-Wise hit a solo homer to take a 2-1 lead, while in the top of the fifth Wise notched its second solo homer of the game to take a 3-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth, Salem tied the game 3-3 after Ault bombed a two-run shot over the fence.
Whetzel gave the Tigers the lead in the bottom of the sixth as he sent a shot over the center field wall to give the Tigers a 4-3 advantage.
In game two, sophomore
Ben Mack is credited with the loss, as he pitched two innings allowing two earned runs and four hits with two strikeouts.
Ault, senior
Jimmy Cramer, sophomore
Tyler D'Alessandro and junior
Walker Dodero each recorded one hit.
The Tigers found themselves down 3-0 in the top of the third inning, while Salem added a run in the bottom of the fourth as junior
Noah Suarez grounded out the shortstop but scored Whetzel to cut the lead to 3-1.
Things fell apart for the Tigers in the top of the fifth inning as UVA-Wise notched six runs on six hits to take a 9-1 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers added one run as Rosario grounded out as junior
Dalton Robison crossed home to cut the lead to 10-2.
Salem is back at the Frank on Saturday as they face Kentucky State with a doubleheader slated for 1:00 p.m.
