GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Salem University softball team earned its first victory and split with Glenville as they lost 4-2 and won 6-4, on a cold and cloudy Friday afternoon.
With the split, the Tigers move to 1-5 on the season, as Glenville slides to 4-2.
It was a pitcher's duel in the first game with the first run not coming until the fifth inning.
Both teams had chances in the first four innings with players in scoring position, but did not capitalize.
Salem got another chance in the fifth inning with two runners on base as junior
Rosey Romick singled to left field to drive in freshman
Kimberly Reckling for the first run of the game 1-0. With junior
Morgan Atkinson on second and Romick occupying first, junior
Christine Bombardiere doubled to right field, scoring Atkinson increasing the lead 2-0.
After a double, an error and a walk, the Pioneers had bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth. Bombardiere came in as relief for Romick, but Glenville other plans. An error allowed two runs to cross the plate, tying the game 2-2. Two more runs were driven in after a line drive to center field as Glenville took the lead 4-2.
The Tigers were unable to answer back in the top of the seventh take give the win to Glenville 4-2.
In game two, the Tigers started off hot at the plate starting off the inning with a solo home run from lead off Reckling. Romick came up with an inside-the-park home run for Salem to make the lead 2-0 at the end of the first.
In the second inning, senior
Veneise Mendez singled and advanced all the way to third base on two sacrifice bunts from junior Syndey McPherson and junior
Breanna Jimenez. Reckling drove Mendez in with an RBI single to right field, as the Tigers led 3-0.
Glenville got on the board in the bottom of the second inning after a solo shot to left field to cut the lead 3-1. The Pioneers scored again in the bottom of the third inning to make it 3-2.
Back-to-back RBI triples to right field from Mendez and McPherson and a sacrifice hit from Jimenez allowed the Tigers to increase the lead 6-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Glenville answered back with two more runs cutting the score to 6-4, but not enough as the Tigers took the win.
Reckling went 4-7 on the day with a home run, two runs-batted-in and a walk, while Romick went 4-6 with a home run, a double, two runs-batted-in and a walk.
Salem hosts Concord at Hope Field on Sunday for a doubleheader with a 2:00 p.m. start.
