Softball Splits on Day 3

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Salem University softball team earned its first win of the Spring Games against Saint Thomas Aquinas (STAC) 5-2 as they split on the day. The Tigers fell to New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) 8-0.
 
With the split the Tigers move to 2-10 on the season.
 
In game one, Salem out hit the Spartans 10-5. Three doubles allowed the Tigers to get on the board in the bottom of the second inning, 3-0.
 
Junior Morgan Atkinson led off the second inning with a double to right field. A sacrifice bunt from senior Veneise Mendez allowed Atkinson to advance to third base.
 
Freshman Paige Winans doubled to right field to drive in Atkinson, 1-0. A single up the middle from freshman Kimberly Reckling put runners on first and third. Sophomore Casey Moritz doubled to center field scoring both Winans and Reckling, 3-0.
 
A walk and an error by the Tigers gave the Spartans a chance to score in the fifth inning. A double drove in those two, unearned, runs to decrease the lead 3-2.
 
Salem answered back in the bottom of the fifth with three singles. Junior Breanna Jimenez led the inning off with a single to left field followed by a single from Romick to put runners on first and second for the Tigers. Junior Christine Bombardiere hit an RBI single scoring Jimenez and advancing Romick to third base 4-2.
 
Runners on first and third allowed Atkinson to score Romick on a ground ball to second base, increasing the lead and giving Salem the win, 5-2.
 
Romick led the Tigers with two hits as Moritz added with two runs-batted-in.
 
In game two, the Tigers fell short to NYIT, producing only three hits.
 
Salem errors allowed the Bears to score five unearned runs of their eight total.
 
The game was cut short after the sixth inning as NYIT scored after a double and an infield error, bringing the run rule into effect 8-0.
 
Moritz, Atkinson and junior Sydney McPherson composed the only three hits of the game for the Tigers.
 
Salem is back in action to face Saint Michael's at 1:30 p.m. and Purdue Northwest at 3:45 p.m. on day four of the Spring Games.
