NUTTER FORT, W.Va. –In its green threads on St. Patrick's Day, the Salem University baseball team defeated Jefferson 9-4 on a sunny afternoon, Sunday.
With the win, the Tigers improve to 13-11.
Sophomore
Carlos Pena started on the hill and earned the win as he allowed just one run and four hits, with five strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
Junior
Tyler Ault was 2-4 from the plate with four RBI and a home run, while senior
Jimmy Cramer was 2-4 with one RBI.
The Tigers started off strong as Cramer singled up the middle to score senior
Harrison Hollis to take the early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Salem added two runs as junior
Dalton Robison crossed home plate with from a fielder's choice from sophomore
Tyler D'Alessandro for a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, sophomore
Remmington Boyce laid down a sacrifice bunt to score D'Alessandro for a 3-0 lead.
The Tigers added a run in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore
Austin Whetzel singled to center field to score Ault for a 4-0 advantage.
Jefferson added one run in the top of the sixth on a single up the middle from Brodhag to cut into the Tigers 4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth with two outs, Ault stepped up to the plate and blasted a three-run shot to left field in honor of his late lizard Larry and for his seventh home run of the season and a comfortable 7-1 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, junior
Noah Suarez doubled down the left field line to score Robison, while later that inning, Ault hit an infield single to score Suarez for a 9-1 lead.
Jefferson added two runs in the top of the eighth as it hit a two-run shot to bring the score to 9-3.
The Tigers are back in action Tuesday as they host Concord at 3:00 p.m. for their nineteenth-straight home game at Frank Loria.
