NUTTER FORT, W.Va. - The Salem University baseball team downed Kentucky State 5-2 in game one and fell 7-4 in the second game of the doubleheader on a very cold Saturday afternoon.
With the split the Tigers record goes to 7-8, while KSU is 9-2-1.
In game one, the Tigers scored five runs on six hits in 25 at-bats, while KSU scored two runs off seven hits in 24 at-bats.
Junior
Walker Dodero earned the win as he allowed just two runs and four hits with four strikeouts in four innings pitched.
Junior
Noah Suarez was 2-3 from the plate with one RBI and one run scored, while freshman
Michael Rosario added an RBI and one run scored with a triple.
The Tigers were rolling early as senior
Jimmy Cramer singled up the middle scoring senior
Harrison Hollis for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore
Tyler D'Alessandro reached on a fielders choice as he scored Suarez for a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
KSU added two runs in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 2-2.
Suarez hit a single through the left side to score junior
Parker Lenivy to regain the lead 3-2 in the bottom of the second.
Salem's final two runs came in the bottom of the fourth inning as Rosario tripled to bring home junior
Dalton Robison and Lenivy hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Rosario.
In game two, junior
James Wiseman is credited with the loss as he allowed four runs and three hits with four strikeouts in four innings pitched.
Robison was 2-3 from the plate with one RBI and a home run, while Cramer was 1-2 at the plate with two walks.
KSU scored the first three runs of the game as it scored one run in the second innings and two in the third.
Salem added its first run in the bottom of the third as Cramer turned on the jets and tripled to score junior
Tyler Ault cutting the lead to 3-1. In the next at bat, sophomore
Austin Whetzel grounded out to second but scored Cramer to bring the score to one, 3-2.
In the bottom of the fourth inning Robison hit a solo homerun down the left field line to tie the game and then senior
Albert Cartenuto launched a solo shot to center field for his first home run of the season to give the Tigers their first lead of the game 4-3.
Things fell apart in the top of the fifth as KSU added four unearned runs.
The Tigers are back in action tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. against Kentucky State for a nine-inning game.
